The minimum qualification necessary to enter General Practice
is a pass in the Summative Assessment Examination. Most GP
Registrars also take the MRCGP examination as this aims to test
'excellence' rather than 'minimal competence' in General
Practice.
You can also take diplomas and membership examinations of
other Royal Colleges, for examples:
- Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and
Gynaecologists
- Membership of Royal College of Physicians
- Diploma of Child Health
- Diploma in Community Child Health
- Family Planning Certificate
The 'gold standard' for General Practice is still regarded as
being the MRCGP examination. This covers all the different fields
of medicine and general practice and should take priority over
the other college exams. Exams can be both expensive and time
consuming so you should probably only consider embarking on other
'College' exams if you wish to develop a special interest in a
particular subject.
Study Leave
Registrars are encouraged to take study leave for courses or
examinations relevant to General Practice. Study leave can be
normally taken for MRCGP courses and examinations, other College
diploma courses and examinations, for family planning courses and
for the National GP Registrars Conference. Our scheme runs a
residential Course and a MRCGP Course and our Registrars are able
to take study leave and attend them.
The study leave allowance is normally 30 days per year. This
includes the half-day release course but the half-day release
does not use up all the study leave allowance so there should be
no problems in arranging leave.
If you are thinking of taking study leave discuss this with
your Consultant or Trainer. If there are any problems speak to
one of the Course Organisers.
Residential Course
We have also introduced an annual two day residential course
for all registrars on the scheme every February away from the
practice and hospital to look into important topics in more
depth. These are proving to be extremely successful and also an
excellent social occasion (judging by last years bar bill). We
encourage all registrars to attend.
MRCGP Course
For several years Dr Rose has been organising a MRCGP
examination course in Barnsley. This is in March and uses many
Royal College examiners to put registrars through their paces. It
is highly successful and a must if you intend to sit the MRCGP
examination.
